Is The Glee Project coming back for a third season? Depends on who you believe.
On Monday, TVLine
reported that Oxygen wasn't moving forward with the reality show. But
Oxygen says it hasn't pulled the plug. At least not yet. In a statement
issued late Monday, a network spokesperson called the TVLine report
"speculation."
One possible factor behind The Glee Project's uncertain future is the fact that Glee has not yet been renewed for a fifth season. Negotiations are ongoing between Fox and 20th Century TV.
Fall TV 2013 Scorecard: Which shows are returning? Which aren't?
The Glee Project, which debuted in the summer of 2011, is
set up to cast one young, talented singer, actor (and
best-case-scenario) dancer in a recurring role on the hit Fox musical.
In each episode, contestants work with Glee's casting director Robert Ulrich, choreographer Zach Woodlee and vocal coach Nikki Anders before ultimately winning the approval of Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy.
Each episode centers on a theme similar to Mr. Schue's white board
lessons, such as theatricality and believability, and required hopefuls
to record tracks, participate in a music video shoot and also perform in
front of such guest mentors as Lea Michele, Jane Lynch and Darren Criss.
Must-see new spring shows
Over its two seasons, The Glee Project has produced several Glee recurring players. Season 1 winner Samuel Larsen and runner-up Alex Newell
still recur as glee club member Joe Hart, and New Directions
rival-turned-member Wade "Unique" Adams, respectively. Fellow winner Damian McGinty and runner-up Lindsay Pearce,
also from Season 1, also recurred last season. McGinty played McKinley
High Irish exchange student Rory while Pearce played Harmony, a student
from a rival high school who applied for NYADA last season along with
Rachel and Kurt.
Season 2 winner Blake Jenner has recurred heavily as new McKinley student Ryder. Finalist Ali Stroker appeared in the "I Do" episode as Emma's niece, Betty, who hooks up with Artie (Kevin McHale) after the unsuccessful nuptials.
Do you want The Glee Project to return?
School’s out for summer. But luckily, school is NOT out forever. Glee Season 4 has come to a close, but the musical comedy will be coming back for Season 5 in the fall.
FOX
has yet to announce an official premiere date, but FOX entertainment
chairman Kevin Reilly has given us some pretty darn specific hints.
During a recent conference call with reporters, Kevin said that he
thinks The X Factor and Glee will likely “get out of the gate two weeks early.”
Last year, Glee premiere on Thursday, September 13. That would put this year’s premiere at Thursday, August 29, provided that nothing changes.
Before you get too excited about Glee’s
super-early premiere, we should point out that other changes to the
usual show schedule don’t have quite as many fans jumping for joy. FOX
has decided to break Glee Season 5 into two distinct chunks. The first half will begin in August 2013, but the second half won’t start until the Spring of 2014.
Between those two halfs of the season, FOX will be airing Rake,
a legal drama about a “criminal defense attorney whose chaotic and
self-destructive personal life often gets in the way of his professional
one."
It’s an interesting format, to be sure, but the majority of fans still seem to be willing to give it a shot!
